The Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute
About the Institute

Founded in 1997 thanks to the generous support of Bernard L. Schwartz, a CUNY alumnus, the Bernard L. Schwartz Communication Institute encourages the emphasis of oral, written, and computer mediated communication across the curriculum at Baruch College. The development of the Institute was driven by a fundamental question, often asked by business leaders, alumni, faculty and our undergraduates: how can we help Baruch students become more effective communicators?

We define communication as a purposeful activity imbedded in a discipline or context; it is the locus in which learning and teaching takes place. We promote a coordinated effort across the disciplines to encourage students to see themselves as communicators, to value the importance of communicating their ideas well and to gain a respect for the differences among the various modes of expression at play in academic and professional environments.

We operate under the Office of the Provost, and are supported by an Academic Advisory Council and a Business Advisory Council, made up of senior faculty and leading executives, respectively.
