What kinds of course content (materials) can be added to a Blackboard course site?

There are three different kinds of content that can be added to a Blackboard course site:

1. Material that you add as text directly to the Blackboard site
2. Files that you attach to your site, so that students can access them from Blackboard
3. Web links that you place on your site so that students can access particular sites on the Web.

Look in the entries for each of the above for information on each of the three methods.

How can I add course material as text?

You can add course material directly to your Blackboard course site. Text can be added directly in a number of areas in the section called "Content Areas" on your Control Panel. The three most important are: (1) Announcements, (2) Course Information, and (3) Course Documents.

1. In Blackboard, enter the Control Panel and go to the Content Area you want.
2. Click on "Add item".
3. Enter a descriptive name or label in the first box.
4. Enter the text in the text box area.  For Announcements, this is identified as "Message"; for Course Information and Course Documents, the box is identified as "Text".
5.  Use Smart Text for material in which you have Web or email addresses that you want to display as links.  Use Plain Text for text in which you do not need addresses displayed as links.  Use HTML only if you are using HTML formatting tags to create visual effects.

In each case, you can simply type in the text, or cut and paste it from another open program, such as Word.

How do I attach (upload) a file onto my course site?

You can attach (upload) a file onto Blackboard in any area which allows you to perform Item Attachments in your Control Panel.
1. Simply enter the location of the file on your computer in the area called "File to Attach" (e.g., c:/documents/help.txt) or use the Browse function to find the file.
2. In the area labeled "Name of Link to File", enter a descriptive name for the file.
3. Make sure you choose the appropriate option in Special Action. To simply link to a file, that you want students to open or download, choose "Create a link to this file". For media files (audio and/or video), choose "Display media file within the page." For zip files that you want Blackboard to open, choose "Unpackage this file" (see Zip Files).
4. Click "Submit" and then "OK" to complete the process.

How do I edit a content item?

1. In the Control Panel, click on the area which contains the item you wish to edit (e.g., "Course Documents").
2. If the item is in a folder, click on the name of the folder.
3. Go to the item you wish to edit and click "Modify"
4. Make the changes, and click "Submit" and then "OK" to complete the process.
